Course Description:

Most people don’t learn much about personal finance in school, so they learn through trial and error. Now there’s a better way! “Money Smart” is a comprehensive presentation series that helps individuals and families make better financial decisions regarding spending and saving money.

Regardless of your financial situation, you’ll find useful information within these hour-long presentations that will help you better understand credit, debt, budgeting, and saving for the future.

About American Debt Counseling, Inc. (“ADC”)

ADC is a national 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization that is committed to reaching out to the community and providing continuing financial literacy seminars, workshops, and materials.  Based on the FDIC Money Smart curriculum, ADC’s “Money Fitness” Educational Program is currently being offered in-person to the staff, clients, and supporters of organizations and companies such as:  Workforce One of Broward County Kids in Distress, Dillard High School, Broward College, Hispanic Unity of Florida and The Urban League of Broward County. In addition, American Debt Counseling participates in Employee Wellness Fairs, Employee Appreciation Days, and Non-Profit Fairs across Broward County where one-on-one counseling is available and financial literacy materials are distributed.

ADC’s updated website at www.americandebtcounseling.org hosts a comprehensive Consumer Education section featuring consumer resources and the monthly “Debt Matters” financial literacy newsletter.

 Syllabus

Buying a car or home? Applying for a credit card? Borrowing money? Saving for college or retirement? Dealing with collectors?  We are now very pleased to present the Money Fitness program at Pride University. The continuing 10-week financial literacy series includes the following 60-minute presentations:

October 11th: Managing Money in Tough Times: Managing your money in good times and in bad times.

October 18th: Understanding the New Credit Card Laws: How the new credit card laws affect you and your family.

October 25th: Charge it Right: How to Make a Credit Card Work for You

November 1st: Give Yourself Credit: Understanding Your Credit Report

November 8th: How Much Debt Is Too Much Debt?: Taking the time to determine whether or not you have too much debt can provide confirmation that you are doing things right or the realization that some financial changes are needed.

November 15th: Avoiding Identity Theft and Consumer Fraud: How to deter, detect and defend against identity theft and fraudulent schemes.

November 22nd: Budget is NOT a 4-Letter Word!: It’s not about how much money you earn  - it’s about how well you manage your money.

November 29th: Stretching Your Food Dollars: The cost of food is rising every day! Saving money on groceries has become more than a luxury, it’s a MUST!  

December 6th: Understanding Home Ownership: Discover the steps involved in buying a house and what to expect as a new homeowner.

December 13thCreative Ways to Earn Extra Money: Do your months stretch further than your money? Instead of falling deeper into debt, try bridging your budget gap by earning a few extra dollars a month.

 A skilled Moderator/Presenter from ADC will lead these workshops/seminars and review informative PowerPoint Presentations on the selected topic. Supplementary materials (such as brochures, articles, financial calculators, newsletters, along with printed copies of the presentation) will be distributed to each participant. These materials will also be available on ADC’s website at www.americandebtcounseling.org and will be sent electronically (via e-mail) to all clients on the organization’s data base.

Barbara Stark supports the mission, vision, and values of American Debt Counseling, Inc. (“ADC”) by demonstrating commitment to community, innovation, empowerment, resource management, and on-going education.

Prior to joining the Management team at ADC in early 2009 as Director of Education and Community Development, Barbara served as Vice President of Strategic Marketing and Brand Management at United Way of Broward County.  In this capacity, she developed organizational marketing, branding, and educational outreach programs that generated growth and encouraged community and corporate partnership initiatives.

Barbara came to United Way through her involvement with the organization as Vice President of Education & Communications at a Ft. Lauderdale-based non-profit organization where she was responsible for all activities related to Community Outreach, Education, Communications, Website Resource Development, Marketing, and Community Relations. This highly organized and skilled leader oversaw the Community Services Department staff that was tasked with reaching out to the communities served by that organization and providing vital information, resources, and tools related to Financial Literacy and Education.  Barbara also served as Chairperson of the Education Committee, Newsletter Editorial Committee, Website Review Committee, and Employee Newsletter Editorial Committee, and was Editor-In-Chief of the monthly and quarterly publications.

Barbara’s real-time business experience is interestingly balanced by the 20 years she has spent imparting communications skills to undergraduate students as a Professor of Communications at Broward College in Ft. Lauderdale and at Nassau Community College in Garden City, NY. Finding the mix extremely invigorating, Barbara enjoys teaching on the college level in tandem with serving in key Education and Marketing positions for major companies.

A native of Long Island, New York, Barbara holds both a Master of Arts and Bachelor of Arts degree in Business Communications from Adelphi University. Currently, she serves on the Broward County Commission on Substance Abuse Board of Governors and as a volunteer for the University of Miami Inner Circle, and St. Jude’s Hospital. A dedicated fitness enthusiast, Barbara is a Certified Personal Fitness Trainer and Health Fitness Instructor, holding a Certificate degree from Hofstra University. In her leisure time, one can find Barbara spending time with her family and dog Harry, going for a run, or shopping for shoes.

As Community Outreach Education Specialist for American Debt Counseling, Andrea Mitchell promotes financial literacy issues to populations served by South Florida’s vital network of social service agencies and non-profits including Kids in Distress, Hispanic Unity, Women in Distress, WorkForce One, the Urban League, The Pride Center and others.

Drawing on her expertise as a Certified Credit Counselor and working alongside ADC’s Director of Community Development and Education Barbara Stark, Mitchell leads workshops and presentations designed to impart critical money management skills. Some of the topics she addresses include household budgeting; smart spending; managing debt; establishing credit history; saving for emergencies, and more.

Prior to Joining ADC in 2010, Mitchell spent seven years as a Certified Credit Counselor helping clients get out of debt and empowering them with basic money skills to live a life of financial stability.

Born in Los Angeles, Mitchell moved to Miami at the age of two. After graduating Barbara Goleman Senior High in Miami Lakes, Andrea attended Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University in Tallahassee.  She is passionate about music, having performed the National Anthem for various community ceremonies throughout Miami, and enjoys spending time with her family and raising two beautiful boys.
