Beginning & Beginning Intermediate Conversational Spanish

Outcome:
To be able to engage in basic conversation in Spanish such as: basic greetings, order a beverage, ask for directions, get information, request help, etc.
During the first session of this course the instructor will determine the level of fluency of participating students. Subsequent sessions will build on language skills: understand language basics, use of tenses (present/past/future), pronunciation, correct usage of words, and engage in basic conversational skills. Throughout the sessions, there will be tests and hand outs to re enforce learning.
Objective: To be able to engage in basic conversational Spanish such as: basic greetings, order a beverage, ask for directions, get information, request help, etc.
Session Description:
Session #1 “Hola, mi nombre es…” (Hi, my name is….) Introduction of the Spanish Alphabet and Vowels; learn pronunciation basics and understand sentence structure and gender of vocabulary. Homework will be assigned.
Session #2 “Numbers and Colors” learn the correct word for colors and numbers, and the pronunciation. Review from previous session, and how you practiced the lesson. Homework to be assigned.
Session #3 “Action Verbs” learn how to use action verbs correctly in sentences. Review from previous session, and how you practiced the lesson. Homework will be assigned.
Session #4 “Family and Friends” learn the correct noun and pronouns. Review from previous session, and how you practiced the lesson. Homework will be assigned.
Session #5 “Human Body” learn to explain an ailment to doctor, etc. Review from previous session, and how you practiced the lesson. Homework will be assigned.
Session #6 “Times and Weather” learn to the tell time or discuss the weather, etc. Review from previous session, and how you practiced the lesson. Homework will be assigned.
Session #7 “Days and Months” learn the days of the week and name of the months. Review from previous session, and how you practiced the lesson. Homework will be assigned.
Session #8 “Food” learn the name of basic food, how to order, etc. Review from previous session, and how you practiced the lesson. Homework will be assigned.
Session # 9 “Potpourri” this session can be student choice as well as review from previous session, and a practice session. Prepare for final exam.
Session #10 “Summary/Exam” in this final session each student should be able to hold a basic conversation on a topic from a previous session.
Biography: Miriam is a native speaker of Spanish, and has a BA in Business Administration from University of Texas at El Paso. After spending 30 years in the corporate world, in which she was the compliance officer for a major garment manufacturer, she will focus her energies on community activities. Miriam’s teaching experience includes teaching English to the University of Texas football team, and surviving….so she hopes to help you learn Spanish!!
